What is Stand Up Paddle Boarding or SUP?

Stand-up paddle boarding is a harmonious blend of both surfing and canoeing. Think of standing upon a stable oversized surfboard and using an elongated canoe paddle to propel yourself and the board through the water. Hence the name “Stand Up Paddle Boarding.” SUP is the acronym for Stand Up Paddle Board. We like to think of it cycling on the water.

Where did stand-up paddle boarding originate?

There are many theories as to where stand-up paddle boarding originated. People have been paddling as a means of transport as early as 3,000BC. Some people attribute the origins of modern paddle boarding to Duke Kahanamoku riding a surf ski in 1939 (the surf ski originating in Australia in 1912), othes say it was Laird Hamilton and Dave Kalama in Hawaii with Paddle Surfing with Rick Thomas bringing it from Hawaii to Mainland USA.

Wherever paddle boarding originated, stand-up paddle boarding has made being out on the water more accessible than ever and we absolutely love it.

How much does a stand-up paddle board cost?

A new stand-up paddle boards can range anywhere from $400 to $3000. It’s important when thinking about purchasing to try different styles of paddle boards. This will help you better understand what kind of paddle boarding you are, and the type paddle boarding you enjoy! Palli Paddle Boards is happy to help you out with this through our free demo days or our private demos.

How many styles of paddle boards are there?

Basic types of SUP Boards are divided into two types; planing hulls and displacement hulls. Most paddle boards are planing hulls – used in flat water and surf conditions. Displacement hulls are typically for touring paddle boards and used for long-distance traveling. Some paddle boards have multiple fins and others just a single fin. Fins help with the boards ability to track through the water in a straight line and with board stability. Surf paddle boards tend to be shorter and wider results in increased maneuverability and stability. Touring boards tend to be long and narrow and while less stable they’re more efficient. There are many different materials used for fabricating paddle boards, including eps foam core, fibreglass, wood, inflatable, and more. Honestly, we could carry on for days about stand up paddle board equipment! If you’d like more info please send us a message and we’d be happy to give you more information.
